Welcome to Oakhurst

In A Nutshell

There aren't many neighborhoods in the nation that achieve star status on their own, but Oakhurst, located in the southwest corner of Decatur, approximately six miles from downtown Atlanta, has that claim to fame. The historic enclave of homes, art galleries, restaurants, and shops attracts a diverse group of residents. It is home to seniors and empty nesters as well as single professionals and young families. Primarily residential, the neighborhood comprises historic, smaller brick homes with welcoming front porches, dating to the early 20th century, and Craftsman bungalows built in the post-World War II era.

Walking, Biking, or Driving

Oakhurst residents enjoy the advantage of easy access to the east-west MARTA line, understandable since the neighborhood was developed as a "streetcar suburb" of Atlanta. However, even though major arterials for vehicle traffic are nearby, there are few direct routes to either downtown Decatur or downtown Atlanta. But at home in Oakhurst, the parks, walking paths, trails, and local streets are filled with residents enjoying themselves. Life centers around the historic business district and the parks, where there is always something happening.

The Scene

Looking at the list of community events, you might get the impression that life in Oakhurst is a constant celebration. That's not far from the truth. The neighborhood’s celebration of Mardi Gras has grown into an event that attracts thousands, and the Oakhurst Earth Day Celebration and Bee Day is a well-attended event. There are block parties, a great BBQ, a Blues and Bluegrass festival, and a community-wide yearly service project sponsored by the Decatur Preservation Alliance.

The Backstory

Oakhurst sprang up as an incorporated village in 1910, with a population of about 100. Decatur annexed part of Oakhurst in 1907, and between 1914 and 1916, the rest of the small city was annexed. Early records were lost in a fire, but the neighborhood has retained its distinct character for the last century. Oakhurst is known for its parks and its green space, but also for numerous music festivals and community celebrations. One of the better-known is an annual free jazz festival under the stars at the historic site of the Old Scottish Rite Hospital.
